What to Give a New Marine After Boot Camp Graduation
Practical, meaningful, and affordable Marine graduation gift ideas … even if you cannot travel to Family Day or graduation.
Not sure what to give a new Marine after boot camp graduation? Here are practical gifts, sentimental keepsakes, and simple ways to celebrate from near or far.
I know what it feels like to graduate without much support
I graduated from Navy boot camp in 2015, and no one came to my graduation. I didn’t have a big group waiting for me or much support surrounding that accomplishment. I know how strange it can feel to reach a milestone that was supposed to be exciting and still feel like you are experiencing it mostly alone.
That is one reason I wanted to write this guide. If your Marine is graduating and you cannot travel all the way to San Diego or Parris Island, that does not mean you cannot celebrate them. A small gift, a handwritten note, a favorite meal, or a keepsake sent from home can still say, “I see what you accomplished, and I am proud of you.
What does a new Marine actually want after boot camp?
Many Marines say they want:
Their favorite meal
Fast food or ice cream
Cold drinks
A shower
Comfortable civilian clothes
Time with family
A quiet place to decompress
Money or a gift card
One useful item for their next training location
Several Marines on Reddit emphasized that food, family time, and comfort may matter more than an expensive military-themed gift. (Reddit discussion, Reddit discussion)
Practical gifts for a new Marine
Durable Watch
A G-Shock is one of the most repeated recommendations from Marines and Marine families. The Casio G-Shock DW6900-1V is durable, water-resistant, and simple enough for everyday wear for near $60.
2. Quality Multitool
A Leatherman Wave+ was repeatedly recommended. If you purchase one, engraving the Marine’s last name can make it less likely to disappear. ~$ 130
**Check with your Marine before purchasing knives or multitools. Rules can vary depending on their next school or duty station.
3. Better Boot Socks
This is an affordable gift that is actually useful. These Fox River Tactical Socks ($15) and Darn Tough Vermont Tactical ($25) were both recommended for durability and comfort. Make sure they are the correct color for your Marine.
4. Flashlight or Headlamp
A compact flashlight or headlamp with a red-light setting may be useful during field training or later duty. This Black Diamond Storm 400 Headlamp for ~$48
5. Sunglasses
A quality pair of sunglasses can be a useful gift, but this is more personal because fit and style matter like these Oakley Holbrook Glasses for ~$175 right now on amazon.
6. Wallet or Engraved Card Holder
A wallet is practical and easy to personalize with a short message or the Marine’s name Prsonalized military wallet options on Amazon
7. Money or a gift card
This may not feel as sentimental, but it can be incredibly helpful while a new Marine moves through MCT, SOI, MOS school, and eventually their first duty station. - ALTHOUGH - It is my experience that a new Marine does NOT want you to give them money; they actually want to give YOU money and ‘treat’ you.
Should you buy your Marine new boots?
This deserves its own section because families search for it constantly.
The answer is: maybe … but do not surprise them with a random pair.
Marines specifically mentioned Danner, Bates, Belleville, and other military boot brands, but preferences vary by MOS, climate, duty station, and personal fit. Several Reddit users recommended taking the Marine to the PX or exchange and letting them select the pair themselves. (Reddit boot discussion, Reddit graduation gift discussion)
Sentimental gifts your Marine can keep
These are especially appropriate for parents, grandparents, spouses, and family members who want to mark the accomplishment.
A framed Dress Blues portrait
A family photography session
A personalized challenge coin
An engraved plaque
A shadow box
A graduation ornament
An EGA necklace, ring, or bracelet
A photo album
A handwritten letter
A personalized wallet insert
A framed platoon photograph
A custom keepsake box
Official Marine Corps graduation gift stores also focus heavily on banners, shirts, mugs, frames, jewelry, plaques, engravings, and recruit photographs. (MCCS Recruit Graduation Gifts, MCCS San Diego recruit photos and souvenirs)
What if you cannot attend graduation?
Please do not assume that being unable to travel means you cannot be part of the moment. I know this because I have been the person graduating without much support around me. A small package or a letter can be remembered for years, especially when someone is far from home.
Suggestions:
Mail a handwritten letter
Send a small package after graduation
Order a personalized keepsake
Send a favorite meal or restaurant gift card
Have a family member take photos for you
Schedule a portrait session when they come home
Send flowers or a small bouquet
Create a photo book from old family pictures
Record a short video message
Send something they can carry to their next location
A final note from me
End with your personal voice and photography connection:
Whether you are standing beside your Marine at Family Day, watching graduation through photos, or celebrating from several states away, your support counts.
And if you are the parent, spouse, grandparent, or loved one who wants something tangible to remember this season, photographs can become one of the most meaningful gifts of all. The watch may eventually need a new battery. The socks will wear out. But a portrait of your Marine with the people who loved them through the waiting can stay on the wall for decades.

Photographing military homecomings is one of the most rewarding and wonderful types of shoots there are. I consider it a huge perk of living in a military town that I get to shoot them very often.
