USMC Summer Graduation, Family Outfit Ideas

USMC Summer Graduation Outfits

I noticed that every time I went to make an outfit guide for a military client I NEVER found one that included a military uniform on pintetest or google searches.

I want to change that, this NEEDS to be a new normal.

Next up in the line of military related outfit guides for families is the USMC Enlisted Dress Uniform Delta, specifically the uniform that is worn during summer-time boot camp graduations at MCRD San Diego. This guide has bold colors to complement this iconic short sleeve dress uniform. Please note, your marine does not graduate with the “blood stripe” on their trousers like those of higher ranks.

What Your Marine Will Be Wearing

Your graduate will wear the Dress Blue “D” uniform, ideal for summer weather. This includes:

  • A short-sleeve khaki shirt

  • Blue trousers

  • White barracks cover (cap)

  • Black dress shoes

This uniform is less formal than the full Dress Blues but still sharp, iconic, and instantly recognizable in photos. Family outfits should complement this polished and muted look—not distract from it.

Recommended Color Palette

For summer, we recommend sticking with:

  • Navy blue

  • White or cream

  • Light tan or khaki

  • Soft reds or muted patriotic accents

These tones pair beautifully with the Marine’s uniform and photograph well in bright sun.

Outfit Ideas for Women

When choosing your outfit, think breathable, classic, and comfortable. Avoid heavy fabrics or anything too clingy—graduation mornings can be warmer than expected.

Outfit Ideas for Men & Teenage Boys

Men should keep things simple and sharp. Avoid jeans or athletic gear, and opt for lighter shades of dress casual during summer.

Outfit Ideas for Kids

Comfort is key with little ones, especially if you’ll be walking across base or waiting in the sun.

Graduation Day Tips

  • Bring water, sunscreen, and cooling wipes

  • Avoid bold patterns or distracting graphics

  • Pack snacks or quiet toys for younger kids

  • Consider wearing your hair up or braided to reduce frizz in the heat

Whether you're the proud parent, sibling, or partner, this day is one you’ll never forget. Dressing thoughtfully ensures you're comfortable, confident, and ready to step into every frame with your new Marine.
